In my case problem is SOLVED using advice from MBrownPEG:
open excel --> options --> advanced, Under the general section should be "ignore other applications the use dynamic data exchange (DDE)" make sure that is unchecked and try again. it even ignores the DDE of explorer.exe
Control Panel. Program And Features,Micosoft Office, change, Repair did not help on my computer with Office 2013 and Windows 7.
